At The Lighthouse Centre...
We believe every person—regardless of ability—deserves the chance to shine. Since opening our centre in 2022, we’ve created a vibrant, inclusive space for individuals aged 9 and up with mental and physical impairments to learn, connect, and grow with confidence.
We’re not your average centre. From baking and woodworking to sewing, dancing, gardening, and sports like Boccia, every day is a new adventure. Through practical skills and creative expression, we help turn abilities into superpowers—boosting independence, self-worth, and even income opportunities.
Founded in 2019 by Grant Oosthuyzen, who lives with Cerebral
Palsy himself, The Lighthouse Centre is a non-profit on a mission to empower the disabled community across Durban. Grant’s vision is simple but powerful: being impaired doesn’t mean being incapable.
Our programs are packed with purpose—and joy. Participants take on personal projects, sell their creations at local markets, and build lifelong friendships in a safe, supportive space. And while they’re thriving, caregivers get a well-earned break, knowing their loved ones are in good hands.
From our buzzing centre to outreach across the city, we’re here to uplift, equip, and celebrate every unique journey.
Because at The Lighthouse Centre, we don’t just support dreams—we build them.
Activities
Exercise & Boccia
Physical activity is essential for well-being. From gentle stretches to competitive Boccia (an adaptive sport like bowls), our programs promote mobility, teamwork, and inclusive play.
Dance & Movement
We offer fun, energetic sessions that combine movement, music, and rhythm — encouraging physical activity, body awareness, and joyful expression.
Gardening
Gardening helps participants connect with nature while learning responsibility and patience. They plant, water, and care for herbs, flowers, and vegetables in our planter boxes.
Sewing
Our sewing workshops teach basic techniques such as threading, stitching, and hand-finishing. These skills allow participants to create their own fabric projects with pride.
Woodwork
Our woodwork sessions teach participants how to cut, sand, drill, and varnish — turning raw materials into clocks, trays, toys, and more. These hands-on skills build confidence, coordination, and creativity.
Arts & Crafts
From painting to handmade décor, our arts and crafts sessions encourage self-expression and fine motor skills. Every piece tells a story — and many are sold at local markets to support the creator.
